Pony Express Wharf

Nearby was the location of the Broadway wharf. The wharf extended from Broadway and Davis streets east to this location. All of the Pony Express mail that was delivered to and from San Francisco used this wharf. The Pony Express ran from April 3, 1860 to November 20, 1861.

The Pony Express mail was carried by either the "River Steamers" of the California Steam Navigation Company that operated between here and Sacramento or the ferry "Oakland" that operated between Oakland and here.

AT THE SUMMIT OF FISH RANCH ROAD PONY EXPRESS RIDER THOMAS BEDFORD FOLLOWED TODAY'S CLAREMONT, TELEGRAPH AND BROADWAY STREETS TO THE PIER LOCATED AT THIS SITE.

CAPTAIN FALKENBURGH ARRIVED HERE WITH THE OAKLAND AT 9:15 A.M. THE TELEGRAPH HAD. INFORMED HIM ABOUT BEDFORD. HE WAITED AWHILE BUT THEN GAVE THE ORDER TO HAUL IN AND LET GO. BEDFORD WAS THEN SIGHTED AND THE PLANK PUT OUT AGAIN FOR THE FLYING HORSE AND PONY EXPRESS MAIL. AT 9:32 A.M. BEDFORD RODE ON BOARD AND ARRIVED IN SAN FRANCISCO AT 10:30 AM.

BEDFORD'S TRIP FROM MARTINEZ COVERED 25.9 MILES IN 1 HOUR AND 40 MINUTES. THIS WAS AN AVERAGE OF 15.5 MPH. THIS FIRST OVERLAND TRIP BETWEEN SACRAMENTO AND SAN FRANCISCO ON APRIL 23, 1860 COVERED 98,7 MILES, IN 9 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES. BY TWO RIDERS.

THIS PLAQUE COMMEMORATES THE PASSAGE IN 1860 AND 1861 OF THE PONY EXPRESS RIDERS FROM SACRAMENTO TO SAN FRANCISCO THROUGH WHAT IS NOW ORINDA.

1860 - 1861 Pony Express

A nearby plaque commemorates the passage in 1860 - 1861 of Pony Express riders from Sacramento to the San Francisco terminus. They usually rode river steamers, but 20 times the Pony Express took an overland route as the steamers did not run on Sundays and occasionally the riders were late. They came through Benicia, via ferry to Martinez, then to Orinda and Oakland, en route to San Francisco.

AT 2:48 AM. ON APRIL 41380, WHEN SAM HAMILTON
GALLOPED INTO A BLINDING RAINSTORM ON THE FIRET
LAP OF THE 6,988-NIES TRIP TO ST JOSEPH, MISSOURI
OURING ITE 18-MONTH EXISTENCE, 178 121 RIDERE AND
800 PONIES CARRIED 38,000 PIZOER OF MAIL WITH THE
LOSS OF BUT ONE POUCH. THIS VENTURE, FOUNDED BY
RUBBELL, MAJORE AND WADDELL, ENDED CALIFORNIA'S
ISOLATION FROM THE REST OF THE UNION.

This Memorial was made possible by a gift from the estate of Sophia Pleasants Comstock;  Funds from the city and county of Sacramento, the State Park System, and the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of California; and contributions from a host of private donors. It was dedicated on June 4, 1976, by the Sophie Comstock Memorial Committee, Mrs. Anthony J. Kennedy, Chairman.
